Фикоцианин - один из антенных белков в спирулине, помогающий в улавливании и передаче энергии света хлорофиллу. Фикоцианин богат природными свойствами, и используется в качестве нутрицевтика. Кроме противоанемичеких, широко изучены его антиоксидантные, иммуностимулирующие, нейропротекторные свойства. Мировой рынок производства фикоцианина растет большими темпами. 6
Биологическая активность этого белка обусловлена молекулой-хромофором, структура которой имитирует продукты катаболического пути гема. Также, хромофор, в естественных условиях аккумулирующий энергию электронов, поглощает избыток активных форм кислорода, препятствуя окислительному стрессу. Это предотвращает заболевания, вызванные воспалительными процессами в организме, такие как артросклероз, диабет, болезнь Альцгеймера, респираторные заболевания.
